Salary £45kpa – fixed term contract for one year with further contract dependent upon performance


Job Summary

Our microgrid systems, comprising solar PV panels, smart power conversion systems (PCS), batteries and control systems, allow customers to benefit from renewable energy when it is needed, and can operate either on or off-grid, offering customers numerous benefits, including a competitive return on investment.


As well as our UK operation, the company has a design and technology team based in China and is in the process of setting up a new state of the art, laboratory and research and development centre in the UK.

We are continually improving and developing our systems solutions for different built environment markets, and in 2020 we will be deploying our technology in two locations as part of a £2m Government grant for a new public EV charging system.

The Electrical and Power Systems Engineer will play a key role in the development and deployment of our showcase EV charging system, enabling successful completion of the design, fit-out, installation and operational activities of the system.  We are seeking an experienced professional and a highly motivated individual to bring all these aspects together for us in 2020 and beyond to enable future commercial success for this and many of our other systems.

In addition, this senior electrical role includes for line management of a small team of laboratory electrical technicians, to enable development and continuous improvement of our electrical systems.


This position will be based from North West.  Our office is in Lancaster at (Lancaster University) though due to Covid—19 restrictions we are working flexibly and remotely from home.  We are looking to set up a laboratory(research and development centre) at Huddersfield University and have equipment site locations at Halton and Wirral (Merseyside) which the postholder will need to visit and work so there will be a mix of home-working and travelling to our office, laboratory and site locations.


Roles and Responsibilities

The Electrical and Power Systems Engineer reports directly to the Operations Director, and CEO / Chief Scientist where relevant) and is responsible for managing a small team of laboratory electrical engineers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensuring all projects meet electrical and construction safety regulations, such as testing installations meet BS7671.

  • Drawing up plans using Computer Aided engineering and design software.

  • To provide specialist advice and support for all our electrical systems, from inquiry through to installation, operation and maintenance, for both low voltage 48-volt systems up to and beyond high voltage 800-volt systems.

  • Undertaking electrical feasibility assessments for larger and turn-key projects, proposing appropriate system solutions, and creating final engineering designs for HVB systems (EnSmartBuild etc)

  • Providing collaborative design support with our broader engineering team in China, when required, during product development, planning and testing (prototype testing).

  • To create and manage embedded engineering solutions, for communication, power and other systems such as air conditioning and fire, as required, from time to time.

Daily Activities

  • To manage the day-to-day electrical engineering operations of the Company in relation to its Entrust Smart Microgrid and EV charging system solutions both in new product development and project management (existing systems).

  • To develop company engineering and project documentation as required in order to satisfy any internal or external requirements.

  • To develop the Company’s systems and processes to allow for the fulfilment of its business objectives in relation to its product and systems development.

  • To liaise effectively with all project partners and suppliers in the successful delivery, commissioning, installation and operation of the Company’s projects.

  • To represent the company and act as an ambassador for the company, at all times in attending meetings with our clients, partners, suppliers and investors, as well as during marketing opportunities (shows, workshops and events) as required.

  • To assist the Company in the development, manufacture, operation and commercial exploitation of Entrust Smart Microgrid technologies and system products for the building environment, including but not limited to space heating, hot water heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, and water pumping.

  • To travel nationally and internationally – as and when the opportunities arise – as part of the Company’s plans to develop and exploit markets within the UK, the EU and overseas.

  • To provide support and assistance to the Operations Director in managing all engineering aspects of suitable projects – including assisting with project reporting, programme management, costings, risks and claims.

  • To undertake any duties as required that are commensurate with the post.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience

We are seeking an exceptional, experienced candidate who is highly motivated, both on their own and working as part of a team, to achieve success for our smart and innovative company at this exciting time.

  • Degree: BEng in Electrical Engineering or related

  • Chartered Engineer in Electrical Engineering or related  

  • At least 10 years power systems or other relevant electrical engineering experience

  • IECEIC trained and familiarity with BS7671 and other electrical installation regulations.

  • Possession of relevant construction sector safety cards, such as CSCS, Safe Pass etc

Knowledge and experience in


  • Electrical designs, installations and commissioning: all environments

  • Lab/workshop development

  • Field project development: all environment (indoor and outdoor)

  • Project design: projects involving solar PV, battery storage, EV charger, heat pumps, transformers, diesel generators, CHP, motors

  • Understanding of relevant UK standards, codes and regulations in electrical engineering and power system engineering in the UK

  • Familiarity and operation of power electronic devices and equipment, such as: high voltage AC and DC power sources, DC/AC inverter and DC/DC converters, power conversion systems, high voltage electronic loads, etc.

  • Clean driving licence.
